Additions of nutrients to the soil  is to ensure that the soil is able to provide an environment where the soils chemical, physical and biological properties provide effective uptake of water and nutrients - the focus is to maximise root development to ensure that large soil areas are accessed for nutrient uptake and to ensure that natural nutrient sequestration can occur - especially Nitrogen.

Shift is from inorganic forms of nutrients to bio-complexed forms
BECAUSE
The plant is able to use nutrients that are in the C-"N" form as an energy source  and complexed nutrients generally are more efficient as they do not become fixed.
